Giulia Freni

Giulia Freni has a PhD in Classical Philology from the University of Basilicata, in Italy. Between October 2023 and April 2024, she was a visiting PhD at the Laboratoire UMR 8167 Orient et Méditerranée – équipe Médecine grecque et littérature technique, in Paris. Her PhD dissertation involved producing a new critical edition of the Carmen de viribus herbarum, a Greek didactic poem on the medical-magical usages of several plants (ca. 3rd century CE). This work is currently under contract for publication in the series Medicine in the Medieval Mediterranean (de Gruyter). Her interests include ancient and Byzantine medicine and magic, ancient folklore, the connections between botany and mythology, and, more generally, ancient technical literature.
